長野県出身。筑波大学第一学群自然学類(数学主専攻)卒業。筑波大学大学院博士課程教育学研究科単位取得退学。東京学芸大学教育学部助手,同助教授,インディアナ大学客員研究員,人間総合科学研究科学校教育学専攻准教授等を経て, 現職。

(1) 数学科授業の国際比較研究

他国の研究者との連携のもと、16カ国の研究者の参加による研究プロジェクト「学習者の観点からの授業研究」を創設、展開してきた。これまでに取り組んできた研究の成果は、3冊の著書(英文)の形で公刊してきた。

(2) 数学的思考の認知的研究

算数・数学の学習者における「メタレベル」の思考の機能に関心をもち,数学的思考の促進のための方法を研究している。

(3) 数学的リテラシーの評価研究

2000年よりOECDによる生徒の数学的リテラシーの評価プロジェクト(OECD-PISA)に数学専門家委員(MEG)として参画し、国際比較のための数学的リテラシー評価の枠組み、評価問題の開発に従事してきた。この研究を継続するとともに、その発展として、国内の大学生に必要な数理的能力に関する実証的研究を進めている。
