Research Themes

Since the late 1970’s, the normative educational philosophy has become a main stream in the philosophy of education in Anglo-Saxon. It can be said that the task of the normative educational philosophy is to adjust the value conflicts between <freedom> and <equality>, and to explore ways of symbiosis in the plural society. My research is based on the principle of equality, focusing on liberal philosophers and their theories.
“Equality” is often valued in the context of distributive justice. However, in the latter half of the 1980s, equality in education come to be questioned from the viewpoint different from the distribution of social goods (educational goods). Movement that seeks public recognition of diverse cultural identities had been seen both in theory and in reality. To respond to these situations, liberal political philosopher (liberalism) have positively submitted civic education theory in the 1990s.
My research question is that why dose they focus on civic education in the 1990s. To inquire this reason, there is a need to find the relationship between the egalitarian liberalism in 1980s and the theory of civic education. The other question is that how is deliberative democratic education effective to integrate different citizens in the pluralistic society.
